Layout Construction

After clearing the hall we were left with an area of 40’ in length [6’ of which was a stage 16” high] and around 16’ wide;

 there is also a toilet, kitchen and 8’ x 8’ porch.

Members decided on a 38’ x 8’ layout in a ‘bone-shape’ – see layout diagrams [when I've done them!!].

The baseboard is constructed of 12mm ply on a plywood ‘girder’ frame on a framework of 1¼ " x 1½" legs. A 1¼" edging upstand of 12mm ply is fixed along edges of the baseboard to prevent locos 'taking a dive'!

A 15"scenic backboard runs almost the complete length of the layout giving a fiddle yard behind and scenic area in front.  Lighting is provided 4' 2"above the layout.  The control panel is placed at the left hand end of the layout over the full 8' width.  This is currently having the layout planned on it ready for wiring.  A branch line is being constructed to run the length of the backboard rising at a gradient of 1:72 to cross the main lines and serve a future extension. Some scenic & modelling work has started on this with the tunnel portal and branch line bridge in place. Building of the main station and baseboard for the town over the station has commenced.

A decision was made to use up to date digital technology for control systems and DCC for track control.

Various 'teaching sessions' on electronic module construction and modelling in paper & card have been held to spread the skills of some members amongst the rest.
